BitTorrent allows you to download movies, books, software, and music from a number of different sources, which makes the downloading process much faster. In discussing bit torrents it’s important to point out that while the bit torrent software is completely legal, downloading pirated movies or music is not.
There are a number of clients you can use to download software, but often described as the most popular is uTorrent. uTorrent includes all the software you’ll need to get started, including a way to search for torrent files. You can have a look for a few more if you’d like, but will need to download and install one before you start.
Your first step in using BitTorrent on your PC is to find the tracker file (.torrent) of whatever media it is you are looking for. You’ll need to use a torrent search engine (like torrentfinder.com) to find it, and once found this file informs the software of the group of people (the swarm) that have the files you need.
After downloading your BitTorrent PC client and opening this file (which you’ll do in software like uTorrent, although it will probably do so automatically when you open it), you’ll have to wait a few minutes for the software to find other people online with the same .torrent file that you have.
With BitTorrent you download a file that takes bits from all these users. When downloading you can either be a leech or a seed. Seeds have the entire file you are looking for while leeches have only a part of the file. Once you start downloading you will be a leech.
Once these are found, the sharing will start, which means the file copying goes in both directions, and you will be sharing your part of the file at the same time as you are downloading from others. The combination and number of leeches and seeds obviously determines the speed of your download.
Many suggest that it’s good manners to leave the Torrent software running for a while after you’ve finished downloading, so that you can be the seed for someone else’s download. One of the great things about BitTorrent is, in fact, the way it encourages file sharing between peers in this way.
You now have the file you need and can watch it in a number of movie players or music programs, but something like Hiro is generally the best choice for legal and spam free downloads. For video instructions on how to use uTorrent specifically, have a look at the movie.
