With BitTorrent you download a file that takes bits from all these users. When downloading you can either be a leech or a seed. Seeds have the entire file you are looking for while leeches have only a part of the file. Once you start downloading you will be a leech.

Once these are found, the sharing will start, which means the file copying goes in both directions, and you will be sharing your part of the file at the same time as you are downloading from others. The combination and number of leeches and seeds obviously determines the speed of your download.

Many suggest that it’s good manners to leave the Torrent software running for a while after you’ve finished downloading, so that you can be the seed for someone else’s download. One of the great things about BitTorrent is, in fact, the way it encourages file sharing between peers in this way.
